Why Juniors Should Play Squash

This game has so much to offer to the school athlete. Not only is it great fun, it maintains peak fitness and can be played recreationally or competitively for many years. Students who play squash have increased their performance in soccer, volleyball, and tennis. A majority of current tennis professionals such as Mikel Pernsfors, Kim Clijsters and Roger Federer use squash as a training ritual for improving their tennis game. Forbes magazine named squash as one of the top ten healthy sports you can participate in.

Squash requires intense concentration, mental skills and toughness. Squash is proven to compliment many other sports as well. By playing squash eye and hand coordination is improved as well as footwork, anticipation and upper and lower body strength.

In the highly competitive process of college applications, squash is a credential, which gives a weighted advantage to the applicant especially in the higher echelon of academic institutions. Due to the need of many Ivy league colleges needing squash players, a squash background is almost the back door into these schools. Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Dartmouth are just a few that are currently recruiting players.

A student also has the opportunity to turn professional and compete as a world ranked player. These players gain sponsorships similar to tennis professionals and tour the world competing in major tournaments with large cash prizes. Some students move forward and become professional squash coaches with private clubs and universities.
