There are over 100 Colleges that have squash
scholarships in the US and more colleges are adding squash
to their programs. Take a look at most of the 100 colleges
in the College Squash Association and you will see that the
top squash schools are the most academically challenging.
In the four years of college you will be competing
with the best college players in the US and in the world,
as many players from abroad come over on scholarships and
play. Most players after college continue the road of turning
pro and travel the world to compete on the World Tour, which
enables them in meeting interesting people and seeing interesting
places.
Getting into college of your choice is not a
forgone conclusion. One has to stay on top of thing and do
the following
Collect information
In the first year of high school get enough ionformation
about college admission and financial aid. Contact Colleges
Squash Association about schools with squash teams or the
colleges directly.
Compile list
Colleges with squash teams follow NCAA rules so you need
to take a look at the NCAA core courses. Make a list if
the nearly 15 or so core courses and be sure they are completed
during high school. Consult a high school counselor and
compile a list of at least 50 colleges that interest you.
Preliminary Tests
Make sure you child take the PSAT/NMSQT tests during freshman
and sophomore years.
The All- Important Junior Year.
Your child should be ready for his SAT and ACT tests.
Apply
During the senior year you child should finialize the colleges
list and apply. Check out for private and local scholarships
and apply for them. Include a CV with the following.
a. Players results of past events in comptetions
b. A 5-10 min video of you child praticing ir playing a
match.
c. Newpaper articles or other media coverage
d. Letters of recommendations form the past and present
coaches.
e. Details of sponsorship by racket companies.
Meeting the coach.
Arrange several meeting to visit the college in order to
know the coach
Final Selection
Experts tell you to go for academic strength, then the
size and location of the school the quality of the coach
and team and finally the financial aid available. Don't
let money influence your decision. Even if there is no mney
in his feshman year that does not mean there will be no
money for later years.
Several students have to work or take out loans for a colleges
degree but with descent grades a descent dquash record and
a n organized plan of action you r child can play his way
through college
